We have the brilliant Welsh based contemporary sculpture carver
Matthew Billington. Working amidst the historic stones of
Wales he is certainly inspired by the ancient carvers but also
brings fluidity into his contemporary sculpture that suggests
his heads were frozen 'mid-morph' in molten stone.
Both Easter Island and Dali spring to my mind when I experience
this contemporary sculpture. The cool, dark Welsh slate
he mostly uses, smoothed like ice, lends a power to
his pieces that is compelling... and compells you
to touch...
... a definition:
Three-dimensional artwork created by shaping
hard or plastic material is sculpture, usually stone, clay,
plaster, cement, polyester, or wood. Sculpture can be created
by removal or addition of material. In stone sculpture the material
is removed rather than added. For other forms e.g., clay the
material is built up and fired. Other sculpted pieces could
be welded, molded, or cast. The person that creates sculptures
is known as a sculptor.
Sculpture uses materials that can be moulded or modulated and
because of this it is considered a 'plastic art'. Most public
art is sculpture. Sculpture gardens are popular wherein many
sculptures may be gathered together in a garden setting.
